Expecting It

For surely there is a latter end (a future and a reward), and your hope and expectation shall not be cut off. Proverbs 23:18 (AMPC)

A few weeks ago, I went to pick up my son from school with my daughters. His teacher came with a giggling daughter to the car and informed me that my son was very upset because his tooth that had fallen out. It had gone down the sink into the drain as he tried to wash it! As a result, he feared that the tooth fairy might not visit him and so his teacher told him to write a letter. His teacher playfully admonished the girls for chuckling because my son is 10 years old, yet still believes in the tooth fairy and …Santa. His sisters encouraged him when he came into the car by telling him it had happened to them, but he still felt that without the tooth there was a good chance the tooth fairy wouldn’t come. That evening, he moaned about such a bad day he had – losing his tooth down the drain and accidentally butting heads during football practice. I tried to cheer him up to no avail.

The next morning, I popped into his room to check on him and saw the note on his bed. Then I remembered, I am still the tooth fairy! Lol! So, I dashed backed to look for some money and found a £2 coin which I put on his headboard. I couldn’t put it under his pillow because it was at the foot of his bed and if I tried to maneuver things, he would wake up.

When I came back from shopping, I met a sad looking boy complaining that the tooth fairy didn’t come and that he knew the note wouldn’t work. I asked if he was sure about that. He gave an emphatic “yes”. Then I accompanied him to his room to check and asked where the note was. As he moved towards the bed, he squealed in delight because then he noticed the coin on his headboard. I chuckled and mused as how this experience applies to us Christians and our expectations from God.

A lot of Christians think we must do things in a particular way to get or earn our blessings from God. My son thought that without his physical tooth, the tooth fairy will not come. Even though he wrote a note, he still wasn’t that expectant. And because the money wasn’t under his pillow (a pillow that wasn’t even where it should have been), he didn’t think to check anywhere else because he wasn’t expectant.  My son was so filled with doubts that he didn’t see the coin that was there all the time.

That is what happens to us. We expect conditions to be perfect for that blessing of God or answered prayer. We expect the plan to be right for that blessing or answered prayer. We expect the atmosphere to be right for that blessing or answered prayer.

But God is saying that because He loves you, you have received the BLESSING! Even if my son didn’t put a note, I would have still put the coin because I love him and know he still believes in the tooth fairy. We need to stay on His word so we can recognise the blessing.

Let’s start today to SIMPLY believe and follow His Word, no strings attached. Just follow the Word!

Interesting read! Without expectation there can be no manifestation.

What a lovely illustration of God’s nature Uzo. He is faithful, it is us that need to look, read, listen and open our hearts to see the blessing he has already given us.
