Against all hope, he believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations according to what was spoken, “So shall your descendants be.” Romans 4:18 (MEV)

Hope is a favourable confident expectation of good because of the word of God! Our expectation is based on what we hear and what we believe – we can expect good or bad depending on what we choose to hear continually and believe. Godly hope chooses to believe God at all costs because of who He is and the knowledge that He is a dependable and reliable God who has promised that His word will not return to Him unfulfilled.

You can have godly hope in the midst of a situation that looks hopeless in the natural. Abraham came to this point in Genesis 17 and he decided to believe God completely saying the same thing as God had promised him to himself and to his situation. I said to a friend today that usually we see only a part, maybe 20%, 40% or even smaller of the whole in every situation. There is so much unseen that happens in the spirit realm where we need to trust God completely and believe that He is working His word out for our good.

Godly Hope deals with the unseen according to Romans 8:24-25 which says, “For we are saved through hope, but hope that is seen is not hope, for why does a man still hope for what he sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience (and confidence).” The unseen things, things of the spiritual realm has a greater influence on the things seen and as long as we hold on patiently to our confession of the word of God we will see things change for us in the natural. Hebrews 6:13-17 says, “when God made his promise to Abraham, he backed it to the hilt, putting his own reputation on the line. He said, “I promise that I’ll bless you with everything I have-bless and bless and bless!” Abraham stuck it out and got everything that had been promised to him.

So have a favourable, confident expectation of good in the whole (100%) believing that God Almighty is holding the greater part in His hand and He is very able, working all things out for your good. He loves you so much, you are His child and He only wants to see the best in your life. He has said that this kind of godly hope will not disappoint you (Romans 5:5), it will not put you to shame, it will not let you down, it will not leave you shortchanged, it will not humiliate you or fail to satisfy your deepest need. Because godly hope is founded on the never failing love of God that has been poured in our hearts by the Holy Spirit.

In everything be determined to Hope against Hope! Against all natural hope, Abraham believed in a different hope based on what God had spoken to him. Natural hope told him that it was impossible for him to have a child at 100 and for his barren wife to have a son at the age of 90…but God said and promised him something different and he chose to hope in God contrary to everything natural, and he received the promise after waiting patiently and confidently in God.

Romans 4:18-21 AMPC

[18] [For Abraham, human reason for] hope being gone, hoped in faith that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been promised, So [numberless] shall your descendants be.

Romans 4:18 Message

When everything was hopeless, Abraham believed anyway, deciding to live not on the basis of what he saw he couldn’t do but on what God said he would do. And so he was made father of a multitude of peoples. God himself said to him, “You’re going to have a big family, Abraham!”
