Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Romans 8:34 (NKJV)

It is overwhelming to think of all that Jesus has done for us – his death, his defeat of hell, his victory and his resurrection. It is even more overwhelming when you consider that Jesus was already in heaven, equal with God before leaving it to go through life on earth and death, a painful sacrifice for us, and then to return to His place of authority at the right hand of God the Father. He gave it all up because of love, his love for you and for the world. Our faith should not stop at his death, but it should be exercised farther on his resurrection, his kingdom and his second coming.

Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. Hebrews 5:8 (NLT)

I was at a conference in 2017 and I heard a minister of God say, ‘if you feel like you are not hearing from God, go back and check the last thing He asked you to do and see if you have done it.’ It struck a chord with me as I thought about how we sometimes live out our Christlike walk – we want a word from God, we want God to speak to us, to lead us and to direct us. However, when He does, we do not always obey Him. It is like stacking up a pile of cards (things to do told us by God) and adding to the pile each time, then at will or our convenience we choose which card to obey. You need to know that God values and highly prizes our daily and wholehearted obedience.

And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 (KJVS)

Some things about God we know and other things we believe. I believe in the things I know God can do, things God has done according to His word and I am walking in faith for the physical manifestation. However the things we know are absolute facts seen, heard and known. I know my name, I know my children, I know where I live and I know these things because they are real, they are facts and they exist. Paul wrote a letter to the church in Phillipi from a prison cell in Rome saying his primary pursuit in life was to know Christ (Phil 3:10, ‘that I may know Him). My bible commentary said, “Paul’s desire to know Christ sprang from no other motive but to enjoy Him. He wanted Christ for Christ’s sake, not his own. He was a lover of God, not a user of God. And whether he moved in Christ’s resurrection power or was stretched to his last ounce of endurance, it mattered little. For Paul, it was all a part of the most fulfilling journey of all: truly knowing God.’

Let everything you do be done in love (true love to God and man as inspired by God’s love for us). 1 Corinthians 16:14 (AMPC)

In the world today as we look around and especially as we see the war unfolding in Eastern Europe for selfish and self centred reasons, we see the failings of natural human love. No matter how sincere natural human love looks like, it has the potential to turn to hatred overnight because it can be selfish and self centred putting itself first.

Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Revelation 2:4 (NKJV)

You may be old enough to remember the song, Endless Love by Diana Ross. One of the lines in the song says. “My first love, You’re every breath that I take, You’re every step I make.” I am sure she was not thinking about God when she sang the song, however, whilst secular rather than spiritual it describes an all encompassing first love that dominates everything that is thought and done. Consider also two people who first realise they are in love – oh the excitement, the joy, the deep desire to spend every second of the day together, the constant conversation, laughter and wanting to tell everybody about the love they have found. No matter how strong, human love sometimes will fail but Gods love never fails, never changes and never grows cold with time. God should be your first love every single day and you should be so excited, so desirous of Him, so passionate and so conscious of Him in everything you think, everything you say and yes, every step you take.

But earnestly desire the best gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way. 1 Corinthians 12:31 (NKJV)

Believers are encouraged to earnestly or seriously desire the best gifts, referring to the spiritual gifts given to the church which is the body of Christ. All the gifts are equally important and the best gifts are the one most suited to the given situation. So for example if someone is sick the best gifts in that situation could be the gifts of healings and of faith.

“No one has greater love [nor stronger commitment] than to lay down his own life for his friends.” John 15:13

On this Easter weekend we remember with the deepest of appreciation and thanks the love of our Lord and Saviour Jesus. He died for us, He was led like a lamb to the slaughter for us and it was the greatest exchange in history. Jesus loves you so much, today and forever, that He took upon Himself all the penalty and punishment you deserved and gave you freedom, abundant life, righteousness, peace, joy and all of Him. It was God’s excellent plan to save you.

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 (NKJV)

Our love story with Jesus is forever and as we discover Him, we love Him more. But He has loved us with an everlasting love from before we were born and His love never wavers, never falters and never ends. It is the greatest and most incredible of all love stories and it continues for eternity. In Jeremiah 31:3, God says, “I’ve never quit loving you and never will. Expect love, love, and more love!”

Therefore, be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. Ephesians 5:1-2 (NKJV)

I believe we could miss the important and wonderful significance of this verse if we only think of being imitators of God is the sense of copying God. It is so much more than trying to copy our father God because it uses the context of ‘as dear children.’

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Colossians 3: 12-14 (NLT)

It was one of the beautiful evenings that I remembered from our marriage counselling sessions. The wife telephoned and just said she needed to talk because she has reached the end of the road there is no point talking her out of divorce. It was a long day at work and we were tired, but when someone needs your support, you must give, so we asked them to come over. They arrived about 8:00pm and as they walked through the door I felt the tension, and they made the hatred for one another very tangible, you can almost touch it.

“Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand.” Matthew 12:25 (NIV)

How can we as a church, city or household be divided against ourselves? Paul was writing to the Corinthian church and in his letter he was appealing with them to grow up spiritually and to stop acting like mere infants, fighting and arguing amongst themselves. In verse 3 of 1 Corinthians 3 he says,” For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?” The Amplified version says, “For you are still [unspiritual, having the nature] of the flesh [under the control of ordinary impulses]. For as long as [there are] envying and jealousy and wrangling and factions among you, are you not unspiritual and of the flesh, behaving yourselves after a human standard and like mere (unchanged) men?

If you had known what these words mean, ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice,’ you would not have condemned the innocent. 8 For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath. Matthew 12:7-8 (NIV)

Jesus never condemns us! John 3:17 says that, ‘God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through Him might be saved.’ It is such a terrible weight to feel condemned by anyone and I so love how Jesus demonstrated His love, mercy and saving power with the woman who had been caught in the act of adultery in John 8:3-11. The woman was brought to Him to be stoned, according to the law of Moses, by the scribes and pharisees. Jesus responded to her accusers saying, he that is without sin among them should cast the first stone. They all left and Jesus loved her saying in John 8:11, “Neither do I condemn thee: go and sin no more.” Jesus will always forgive every sin.

Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God. John 20:17

Being able to call God Almighty my Father is one of the greatest privileges of being a christian. The God who created the entire universe and everything in it, who is called All powerful, All knowing and Everywhere present is my Father.

Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should
be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it
did not know Him. 1 John 3:1

I woke up one day thinking about how much God loves me. I was so overwhelmed
by the thought that I found myself saying, ‘I reserve all my love for God and for all
that God loves.’
