In Your Mouth

“But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach” Romans 10:8 KJV

I have a beautiful dog, his name is Tyson, and he likes food so much. In his younger days he would sometimes go around sniffing especially on his walks picking up all kinds of things. So, I have to ask from time to time, ‘what is in your mouth?’

God wants His word to be in our mouth, everything else is unhelpful, unfruitful, and unproductive. In Romans 10:8, talking about being right with God by faith, Paul says, the word should always be near you, in your mouth and in your heart. I like the message translation which says, ‘the word that saves is right here, as near as the tongue in your mouth, as close as the heart in your chest. It’s the word of faith that welcomes God to go to work and set things right for us.’

God’s word in your bible is His promise, His will, and His tool to save you. It is the word that saves, and one of the ways you get it into your heart is when it is in your mouth. I was reading a book this week which went into detail on the cyclic process saying that when you speak the word of God with your mouth your inner ears pick it up and the word is directed straight into your heart, and then from your heart comes the words deposited through your mouth. And this repeated cycle of words in your mouth and heart is how your faith is built up quickly, by hearing yourself speak Gods word continuously because you believe what you hear yourself say more strongly than what you hear someone else say.

God’s word in your mouth welcomes God to go to work and set things right for you. Psalm 103:20 says, ‘Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.’ Guess what – as soon as you give voice to Gods word in your mouth, and only Gods word, His angels go to work on your behalf setting things right.

For most believers our challenge is the inconsistency in our words. Usually, we start off with Gods word in our mouth and then start to mix it up with words of fear, doubt, intellectualism, what someone said or believes etc. And this happens when we take our eyes and thoughts away from Gods written word.  Perverse words are all around us, contrary and crooked words, words that do not match up with Gods. Proverbs 15:4 says, ‘A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit.’ The footnote in my bible says, perverseness breaks the spirit.

I want to encourage you to be more intentional about what is in your mouth, to practice keeping Gods word in your mouth especially when you need saving from something. It will take discipline because you understand it’s importance, but you can do it because you have a Helper, the Holy Spirit. If you miss it saying the wrong words, just repent, spit it out under your feet and get back on track. God’s word in your mouth has all the power, life, and faith in it that you need to save, deliver, heal, and restore.
